NEW: Tip of the Week

TIP #24: MUD STAINS

Prepare yourself for mud on your carpet this spring with these easy to follow steps get those mud stains out of your carpet before they leave a mark. #StainFirstAid #WelcomeSpring

TIP #1: STAIN PREVENTION

When you spill, remember to blot, not rub. And never use store bought cleaners. Instead, use clean water at first. If the water does not remove the stain or spill as you blot, then use an appropriate cleaner displaying the Carpet & Rug Institute's Seal of Approval.

TIP #2: PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

Carpet Manufacturers require you to have your carpet professionally cleaned every 18 to 24 months (check with your manufacturer to be certain) using hot steam extractions. Failure to maintain records or to upkeep the maintenance schedule could void your warranty, so try to remind yourself. When considering companies to clean your carpet, research their qualifications and remember that their ability to perform proper maintenance is not proven simply because they have a van and a hose. Likewise, cheaper is not always better. Remember, you can always call us for a recommendation if you need one done anywhere in Panama City or the surrounding area.

TIP #3: WALK-OFF MATS

Use walk-off mats at all of your doorway entrances to the home in order to alleviate areas of excessive wear. For only a few dollars, you can replace the walk-off mats periodically while protecting the major investment of your floor. The walk-off mats will also assist in keeping dirt and water where you want it--at the doors and not throughout the house--which will help keep your house cleaner

TIP #4: SMALL MOISTURE DAMAGE

If you have hardwood or laminate floors, place indoor/outdoor mats under your pets' bowls, near the kitchen sink, and in front of your stove to catch the everyday splashes and spills that occur. Once placed, you can easily remove them, wash them, and replace them periodically, thus saving yourself expensive repairs due to moisture damage.

TIP #5: SCRATCH PREVENTION

For just a few dollars you can purchase self-adhesive felt pads for the bottoms of your chairs. The small price provides a big fix for those everyday scratches you might see on your hardwood floors.

TIP #6: EXTEND YOUR CARPET'S LIFE

Do you notice that your carpet in places such as your hallway and doorways is matted down? If it comes back to its normal height, then your carpet is still in good condition. The industry recommends that you vacuum those higher traffic areas multiple times per week whereas the rest of your home only needs it once per week. Regular vacuuming will extend the life of your carpet and ensure that you receive the most from your investment.

TIP #7: TILE MAINTENANCE

When cleaning the grout in your tile, always use a neutral cleaning solution. Cleaning agents such as bleach, vinegar, and ammonia are caustic and may damage your grout or even your tile. Repeated use over time may cause white, chalkiness on the surface as well as cause the grout to crumble. Even weak acidic solutions may also pit the surface of your tile and may increase the likelihood of staining over the life of the tile as well as increase the difficulty in cleaning the tile's surface.

TIP #8: HARDWOOD FLOOR MAINTENANCE

When cleaning your hardwood floor, never use water in large quantities as if from a mop. In fact, water on wood should be avoided except for cleaning up small messes contained in specific areas. For instance, using a wet paper towel to clean up a smudge or spill is OK, but you should never let water sit on wood. Immediately dry all water from the surface.

TIP #9: CARPET FADE PREVENTION

Do you live in an area where the sunlight is extremely direct and powerful? If so, then you noticed how carpet can fade over time, and you might wonder what you can do to prevent it. One way is to research your carpet before purchase and to buy one that is fade resistant. The best carpet for areas with direct sunlight is one that is solution dyed. Solution dyed products have color throughout the fiber instead of only on the surface. As such, they react much better to sunlight and maintain their color extremely well over time.

TIP #10: HARDWOOD CLEANING

Have you noticed that your hardwood attracts dirt and footprints? It probably is not the hardwood but more likely how you maintain it. Ensure you use a cleaner designed for hardwood floors, and more importantly, use a cleaner that is neutral and leaves no residue. If you feel your feet "sticking" to the surface after cleaning, then the cleaner leaves a residue. You need to switch. We offer a full line of cleaning supplies approved for your floor here in Panama City, FL.

TIP #11: TILE MOVEMENT

If you have a tile backsplash or shower, do you find that the grout in the corners cracks? Corners of walls are subject to constant movement from expansion and contraction. You can eliminate the unsightly consequences of movement by caulking the corners.

TIP #12: CLEANING PRODUCTS

When cleaning your hardwood floors, use a broom, and only spot clean with water. If you find dirt sticking to the surface, it most often is because of your cleaning products.

TIP #13: PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

Do you notice that after you have your carpets professionally cleaned, they look really great immediately following, but afterward, they get dirty again very quickly? It may be that your cleaning professional is not using hot steam extraction (the only approved method) and that the individual left a soapy residue on the carpet. The residual soap progressively attracts dirt over time.

TIP #18: CARPET SNAGS

If you have a berber carpet (one with loops), it can sometimes snag, and if you do not catch it quickly, the snag can turn into an unraveled line of missing yarn.  If it is a single loop and very minor, one fix might be to snip it tightly to the floor with a pair of scissors.  If it is a lot of yarn, you may need to carefully glue it back in place very carefully using a normal household adhesive.  Whichever method you choose, you will see it, but the alternative might look much worse.
